5 Excuses to Go Outside & Play

Welcome all new subscribers to my monthly newsletter. I hope you are enjoying your summer and that you're spending some time outside in the sunshine.

The weather has been amazing in Victoria this summer and I've been making an effort to go outside often. I really like to spend time in nature and watch the wildlife thrive and prosper. Last week, I noticed two woodpeckers bustling around near my home! So seeing unusual plants and animals is a fun excuse to go outside.

For the past two weeks, I've been dog sitting a goofy Weimaraner called Topaz and that meant I had to take him on walks every day. I had a chance to meet some of my neighbours and get some of my own exercise, so walking a dog is a great excuse to go outside.

On Saturday, I had some errands to run but I didn't feel like getting in my car and driving around. I decided to go for a walk and ended up walking something like 10K. It took me 3 hours! I had such a good time! I really took my time and picked wild and organic blackberries all along the way and they were so delicious! Blackberry season is definitely another good excuse to go outside.

And there's nothing like a spa party outside in the summer. We were at Bear Mountain and it just made sense to set up the zero gravity chairs on the hotel room's adjoining patio. The view for the guests was spectacular and the temperature was neither too hot nor too cool all afternoon. So spa parties are an awesome excuse to go outside.

If you're looking for another neat idea, please read a recent blog post I wrote called, "Find Peace of Mind as you Walk a Labyrinth." There are a lot of Labyrinths all over the world that people have built in natural settings and I'm sure they would be lovely to walk through.

Please enjoy this newsletter and thank you for subscribing. ~ Maria

Today's Recipe — Cucumber Avocado Gazpacho

cucumber avocado gazpacho

Here's where the amazing avocado teams up with the cool cucumber and this soup doesn't require any cooking.

Ingredients
4 large cucumbers, peeled and seeded
    2 large avocados
    3 cups chicken broth
    2 medium shallots, finely chopped
    1/4 cup olive oil
    2 TB sherry vinegar
    Juice of 1 lime
    Lime wedges (garnish)
    1/2 tsp sea salt
    drop of Tabasco sauce (optional)
    Cilantro, chopped (garnish)
    Sour Cream (garnish)

To make soup: Slice the avocados in half, remove the pit and scoop out the green, creamy goodness. Peel and seed the cucumbers also. Place the cucumbers and avocados in a food processor or blender with some of the broth and process until smooth. Add remaining broth, shallots, lime juice, sherry vinegar, salt and optional hot sauce and blend. Cover and refrigerate until chilled (at least 4 hours) or overnight.

To serve: Ladle the soup into bowls and garnish with a dollop of sour cream, some chopped cilantro and lime wedges. Give your guests the option of adding their own hot sauce.

About Homespunspa

The concept of Homespunspa was sprung from a sleep-over in 1999 after I invited some friends to a slumber party that turned into a spa party.

We each created our own home spa treatments for hair, nails, face and body using natural ingredients like avocados, lemons and essential oils.

That night, my love of spas was awakened and as my head hit the pillow, the word, "Homespunspa" was born.

Homespunspa Enterprises was established in 2001. In 2002, I launched www.homespunspa.com and the site has been live on the Internet without interruption all of these years.

In 2006, I self-published a book of home spa recipes entitled, How to Throw a Home Spa Pajama Party the Homespunspa Way.

In 2009, I added a blog to the Homespunspa website. In 2010, I graduated from the Aveda Institute with a diploma in Esthetics. In 2011, I added a mobile spa department to Homespunspa.

Thanks for reading the Homespunspa Ewesletter. I hope to see you soon.

Sincerely,

Maria Alexandra Koropecky
